September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. However, if you've ever known a child who has had to fight cancer, or even had a scare, it is probably on your mind every day.
When my niece was around 10, she started having awful headaches, and no one could figure out why. She was sent to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, and they found that she had fluid on her brain. The fluid just wasn't draining like it was supposed to and the pressure was causing her headaches.
Being in that hospital, with all of its sights, sounds, and stories, was certainly an experience. I got to see how amazing they were with the children.
My family was blessed, and my niece is just fine. She didn't have to go back for the surgery they thought she may have needed, and we were so thankful for that.
There are many families who are not so blessed, and they have to spend much more than a few hours there. There are so many children whose parents have to worry, yet try to keep their child's life as close to normal as possible. I can only imagine that those little red wagons and stuffed animals can only do so much to make them feel like their lives have not been drastically changed, though.
So, for all of the children who are suffering, yet somehow seem like the most grateful for their lives, please visit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and find out ways you can help with the fight.
If you know of a family having to go through this, extend kindness to them, and be sure to extend help to them. Even the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference.
